PSV Eindhoven have been warned about the talents of Bukayo Saka and ‘Arsenal’s best player’ Martin Odegaard ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League group-stage clash at the Emirates Stadium.
Then again, it’s hard to imagine that PSV coach Peter Bosz would have needed much reminding.
In Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, the Eredivisie challengers face the unenviable task of trying to keep two of Europe’s most creative talents quiet on Arsenal’s own turf; Mikel Arteta’s in-form side desperate to make a victorious return to the Champions League after six years away.
Odegaard, the Gunners’ captain these days, knows PSV well too, having come up against the Eindhoven outfit during loan spells at Heerenveen and Vitesse Arnhem.
Arsenal host PSV in Champions League
“(Odegaard) is Arsenal’s best player. He was also very good in the Eredivisie,” Kaj Ramsteijn, the former Feyenoord and Excelsior defender tells Voetbal Primeur.
“He actually starts next to (Kai) Havertz and ahead of Declan Rice, as controllers in the build-up.”
Saka, meanwhile, could make his long-awaited Champions League debut when PSV come to town. Arsenal’s twinkle-toed number seven first caught the eye in red-and-white in the Europa League all those years ago under Unai Emery, and will be determined to prove he belongs alongside the very best the continent has to offer.
Good look PSV’s left-back
“Bukayo Saka is truly unparalleled,” adds Ramsteijn, sympathising with whoever is tasked with marking the England international at left-back.
“Patrick van Aanholt or Sergino Dest can really make a case for that.”
Arsenal will be the clear favourites, of course. But write off a PSV side with eight wins out of nine in all competitions at your peril. Bosz’s flying side have scored 29 goals already this season, and should pose plenty of problems with the in-form Luuk de Jong and dazzling wingers Johan Bakayoko and Noa Lang.
What’s more, PSV defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the Europa League at this stage nearly 12 months ago.
