Ben Mee expressed his surprise at Mikel Arteta admitting that he would like to substitute his Arsenal goalkeepers David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale during games.
The Brentford centre-back, who played with David Raya last season, added that he is ‘not sure’ what Mikel Arteta sees in order for him to think that way.
On Sunday, Mikel Arteta handed David Raya his debut as Arsenal recorded a 1-0 win over Everton, with Aaron Ramsdale parked to the bench.
Ben Mee shared that, after that game, he messaged his former teammate to tell him that he ‘looked right’ in an Arsenal shirt, as he told Premier League Productions (18/09/23 at 10:55 pm).
The 28-year-old didn’t have much to do during the game, but he looked comfortable on the ball and he claimed any aerial balls that were fired his way.
But Arteta’s comments after the game drew a huge response, which will just continue to rumble on during these coming weeks.
Raya v Ramsdale
“It’s a really interesting statement,” said Mee. “You wonder what he has seen to change a keeper at a late stage of a game. Maybe he sees someone with a calmer head late on in the game. But I am not sure what he sees to want to change it.
On Raya collecting crosses: “There is nothing better when my keeper comes and does that. He’s very good at it. He comes off his line and claims balls. Great hands when he comes and catches it. Great with his feet. He can pick a pass.
“I messaged after the game (Everton) and just said he looked right in there. He looked like he had been there a long time and was very comfortable.
On if you can have two number ones: “I think there are going to be a lot of games for Arsenal this season. Obviously the Champions League. They are going to want to be competitive with everyone. I mean they will be fighting it out for a place and competition is always good to have.”
Brave from Arteta
This is a very brave road that Arteta is heading down, and in truth, there will be no middle ground.
This idea will either see the Premier League title-chasing side speed ahead or fall off a cliff in spectacular fashion.
Either way, it’s great to see a manager thinking way out of the box and not doing the norm.
