Micah Richards has said that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta should have sold Aaron Ramsdale in the summer transfer window when he signed David Raya.
The former Manchester City star has said that Arsenal should have sold Aaron Ramsdale and allowed him to become the number one goalkeeper at another goalkeeper if manager Mikel Arteta was always going to make David Raya his first choice this season.
Raya joined Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
The Spain international goalkeeper, 25, started against Everton in the Premier League last weekend.
Raya was also in goal when Arsenal took on PSV at the Emirates Stadium in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.
The Spaniard could be in goal for Arsenal when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby this weekend.
Micah Richards on Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale
Richards said about Ramsdale on The Rest is Football podcast: “I believe now Ramsdale’s confidence has been shot just because he has brought in someone and basically said he was going to use both goalkeepers.”
The pundit added: “Ramsdale had an excellent season last season, so I don’t get it.
“If he wanted to replace him, just do it in the summer.
“Bring in Raya as the number one and get a number two who can challenge.”
Richards continued: “Why would you want both?
“Let Ramsdale go and be a number one somewhere where he is appreciated.”
Arsenal right to keep Aaron Ramsdale
In our view, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was right not to sell Aaron Ramsdale in the summer transfer window.
After all, Arteta needs a very strong squad this season.
Arsenal are aiming to win the Premier League title and also make an impact in the UEFA Champions League.
Both Ramsdale and David Raya are very good goalkeepers, and we believe that healthy competition would make Arsenal better.
Moreover, Arteta may not have decided that he was going to make Raya his first-choice goalkeeper until now.
