PSV Eindhoven coach Peter Bosz believes his side came up against ‘one of the best teams in the world’ during Wednesday’s 4-0 Champions League group-stage hammering at Arsenal.
A Bukayo Saka opener after just seven minutes at the Emirates Stadium; There could hardly have been a more fitting way for Arsenal to celebrate their return to Europe’s premiere club competition after six years of absence.
Arguably no player epitomises Arsenal’s rise in the Mikel Arteta era than their homegrown number seven, Saka marking his long-awaited UCL bow with a smart finish after a fumble from visiting goalkeeper Walter Benitez.
Leandro Trossard, matchwinner at Everton on Sunday, made it two moments later as the Gunners exploded out of the blocks, ruthless finishes from Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard then sealing a crushing victory against a PSV side who touched down in North London after eight wins in nine games.
And, for Bosz, this was simply a step up his PSV team could not handle.
Arsenal hammer PSV Eindhoven
“We played against a team that is better than we are. A team that can play even faster than we can play. We haven’t encountered that yet this season,” the former Borussia Dortmund coach tells De Telegraaf.
“(Arsenal) came second last year. Then you are talking about one of the best teams in the world, and we have now played against them.
“Normally I am a grumpy and deeply sad man after a defeat, because I often think that it was unnecessary. So, I don’t have that now. We played against an incredibly good team.”
A winning Champions League return
Putting on a masterclass in finishing in front of an enthralled fanbase, this was comfortably Arsenal’s most complete, most dominant performance of the season so far. A tally of 18 shots and nearly 60 per cent of the possession highlighting their control of proceedings.
“Of course, 4-0 is a big result,” Bosz adds. “We played against a better opponent and then it went too fast. It’s a bad feeling when you notice that you’re one step late everywhere. I don’t blame the players.
“They worked hard and tried to play football. We weren’t good enough. That can happen, but we must learn from the mistakes we have made.”
