Former Arsenal chief Sven Mislintat is already facing calls for his head at Ajax after a dreadful start to the new Eredivisie season for the Amsterdam giants.
After a rather mixed hit-rate during his time at the Premier League giants – Arsenal eventually made a £103 million loss on his eight signings despite the early success of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Bernd Leno and co – Sven Mislintat hasn’t even been afforded the usual honeymoon period in his new home.
A tally of one win in four games means Ajax have made their worst start to an Eredivisie season since 1965. And while Mislintat cannot be expected to shoulder the blame alone – new head coach Maurice Steijn is yet to prove that he can make the step up in the biggest job of his managerial career – one former Ajax winger believes the club’s technical director should already be receiving his P45 with a near-£100 million summer splurge backfiring spectacularly in the early weeks of the new campaign.
Former Arsenal chief Sven Mislintat under fire at Ajax
“I was sitting in the stands yesterday, and I was just laughing. It was laughable to see. This cannot continue like this,” Andy Van der Meyde tells Veronica Inside.
“Something has to happen at Ajax. That Mislintat has to go immediately. He has to leave immediately, tomorrow. He is ruining everything at Ajax.
“The whole club is going to ****. He has to leave very quickly.”
Ajax were hammered 3-1 by FC Twente on Sunday, Benjamin Tahirovic, Sivert Mannsverk and new £20 million centre-half Josip Sutalo enduring something of a baptism of fire in Dutch football.
‘A catastrophe’
“They are talented players. But are they really good enough for Ajax?” Argues one-time Netherlands midfielder Marciano Vink.
“Suppose you put Tahirovic or Mannsverk at FC Utrecht or Fortuna Sittard; Would they stand out? These are questions you can ask. I don’t know yet. If you you’re four games in, and you don’t know it yet, that’s quite tough.”
“(Mislintat) came in, appointed a trainer and went shopping with his wallet. That’s it. Everyone watches and nods,” adds the legendary Marco van Basten.
“It is very painful. Bad signings. It was already a mess last year, but the (problems) has only gotten bigger and worse. It is a catastrophe.”
Mislintat, during his time alongside Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund, was nicknamed ‘Diamond Eye’ due to his ability to spot a gem in the dirt.
