Pundit Garth Crooks believes Mikel Arteta must tread carefully as he rotates Arsenal goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya.
Mikel Arteta must be careful with how he handles Arsenal shot-stoppers Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya following Sunday’s win at Everton.
That is according to BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks, who has been speaking about Arsenal in his Team of the Week column.
Goodison Park tends to be a tricky venue for Arsenal, and last season’s 1-0 defeat to the Toffees was firmly in the minds of Gunners fans.
Arsenal avoided a similar disaster though, securing a deserved 1-0 win as Leandro Trossard finished off a beautiful move.
This could have been a real banana skin for Arsenal but they came through and secured three points on the road.
Garth Crooks comments on Arsenal goalkeeping situation
The big talking point surrounded Raya, with Arteta deciding to make a goalkeeping change.
Ramsdale hasn’t been especially poor this season, but Arteta brought Raya in for a Premier League debut in an Arsenal shirt.
The Spaniard arrived from Brentford over the summer and Arteta decided this was the right time to give him a chance.
The decision has received real mixed opinions with some believing that rotating goalkeepers is ridiculous.
Pundit Crooks has now suggested that Arteta needs to be careful in terms of how he handles this goalkeeping situation.
Crooks feels like ‘may come home to bite Arteta’, believing that Ramsdale hasn’t done anything wrong and the decision may upset the England goalkeeper.
“Top players want to play in the biggest matches. Leaving Aaron Ramsdale out for David Raya when the England goalkeeper hasn’t put a foot wrong may come home to bite Arteta,” said Crooks. “The Arsenal manager needs to handle that situation with great sensitivity,” he added.
Ramsdale already being linked away from Arsenal
Ramsdale has been an outstanding character throughout his time at Arsenal and has always welcomed competition for places.
A part of Ramsdale may well feel a little aggrieved to have lost his place, but we can also imagine that it just fired him up even more.
One interesting factor though is that Ramsdale is already being linked away from Arsenal.
The Daily Mail report that Chelsea and Bayern Munich are showing an interest in signing Ramsdale in 2024.
That report indicates some ‘internal concerns’ about Ramsdale’s performance, which may well see Raya take on a big role.
It’s too early to suggest that a transfer is on the cards, but this is a situation to monitor if Ramsdale doesn’t win back his place more regularly.
