Following Manchester City’s historic Champions League win in Istanbul, Erling Haaland name-checked Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard and how his next goal is to reach the Euros or the World Cup with Norway.
The goal-crazy Manchester City striker helped Pep Guardiola’s side secure the Treble on Saturday evening when they beat Inter 1-0 in Istanbul and spoke about the next goal in his career, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (10/06/23 at 11:35 pm).
When the players were doing their post-match interviews, Thierry Henry asked Erling Haaland if ‘it’s on your mind’ that he now wants to take Norway to a major tournament, before the 22-year-old proceeded to tell the Arsenal legend that he will do ‘everything’ to make it happen and how someone like Martin Odegaard is in a ‘really good’ situation at club level.
It has been 24 years since Norway, a small Scandinavian country in Europe, reached a major tournament and they have only qualified for the World Cup itself on three occasions.
At the time, Haaland wasn’t even born yet, whilst Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had just helped Manchester United become the first English side to win the Treble, oh how times have changed.
Whilst football’s new goalscoring powerhouse will want to continue to dominate on the club stage, he is keen to help his nation reach a major tournament, as he touched upon his footballing nation growing with players like Odegaard.
“For me, the World Cup and the Euros, both,” said Haaland. “I would love to play the World Cup and the Euros with Norway. I will do everything I can to make it happen.
“Of course, it’s Norway. But we are getting there. The players are getting there. We have Odegaard, who has been captain of one of the second-best teams in England. That’s a really good thing.
“So, we are getting there. I think if I am going to look back at my career, then I will need to have this. World Cup or Euros.”
Can Haaland and Odegaard help Norway reach a major tournament?
Well, they will be kicking themselves if they don’t. They have two growing superstars playing on world football’s biggest stage and they are only 22 and 24, respectively.
Following Odegaard’s £30 million transfer from Real Madrid (Sky Sports), he has perhaps now become Arsenal’s most important player and it won’t be long before they become champions of England themselves.
And if they are stopped, like they were this season, then it will be because of the all-dominant Manchester City team, who have one of the most unique footballers steering them towards glory in Erling Brute Haaland.
