Shaka Hislop says Mikel Arteta’s thought process around Arsenal duo Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya has ’thoroughly confused’ him.
The former Premier League goalkeeper added that Mikel Arteta wanting to substitute his keepers, as well as how he is using them, is the ‘worst idea’ he has heard in football, as he told ESPN.
On Sunday, David Raya made his Arsenal debut as the Premier League title-chasers recorded a 1-0 win at Everton – Ian Wright shared his thoughts on the matter.
Given that the Spanish star was signed this summer on a loan deal from Brentford, then many people expected Aaron Ramsdale, at some stage, to be dropped.
But it seems as though, as the season progresses, Mikel Arteta is going to rotate his keepers and even take them off during matches.
This is really out-of-the-box thinking from the Arsenal manager and it has left former Newcastle United shot-stopper, Shaka Hislop, stunned with disbelief.
Reaction to Arteta’s comments on Ramsdale and Raya
“I am thoroughly confused by what Mikel Arteta is trying to get at,” said Hislop. “I don’t understand what he is saying. About his suggestion.
“So, the reason why you drew two games is because you didn’t change your goalkeeper on 60 and 85 minutes.
“As bad ideas go, this is right up there. I don’t think I have heard a worse idea in football. I am not sure whether it’s bad to think it or worse to say it out loud. I think what he has done there, and I have said this from the get-go, is that he has certainly alienated Aaron Ramsdale.
“I said all along. If David Raya is your number one, say that. That’s my number one, that’s who I am going with. If it’s Ramsdale, say that. But this kind of playing the two off each other, I don’t think it serves either well. This has gone above and beyond what I certainly didn’t expect.”
Who starts in the Champions League – Raya or Ramsdale?
There could be every chance that Ramsdale now returns to the XI and starts Arsenal’s Champions League fixture against PSV on Wednesday night.
If it does or doesn’t happen, all the talk of who starts in between the sticks will only increase this weekend.
It’s only the small matter of the north London derby against high-flying Tottenham.
Given all this noise around Arsenal’s goalkeepers, you would imagine that if things go wrong or any of them make a costly mistake, then Arteta will have some serious verbals being thrown at him.
