Alan Smith has said that Arsenal fans should not be so negative about Kai Havertz, noting that the Germany international moved to the Gunners from Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea only in the summer transfer window.
The Sky Sports pundit believes that Kai Havertz will eventually come good for Arsenal.
Arsenal fans told to be patient with Kai Havertz
The former Arsenal star has said that the Gunners’ fans should not hammer Havertz for not starting the season strongly.
Smith has said that the Germany international, who can operate as a forward or as an attacking midfielder, could be a better player than Granit Xhaka.
Swiss midfielder Xhaka left Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
Smith said on The Gooners Podcast, as transcribed by TBR: “It does annoy me a bit the way people are willing to criticise him so quickly.
“These are Arsenal supporters and you’d hope that they support in the early days when a new player comes in and he’s trying to find his feet.
“He’s trying to understand what the manager wants and I think that does take time.
“You see players go in at Man City and try and understand what Pep Guardiola wants and needs, it took Jack Grealish a season.
“I’m not saying it’ll take [Kai] Havertz a season but he’s just finding his feet in that squad, in that dressing room and in that first XI.
“I think he’s a very good player technically, I think he can be a good player for us and I heard [Mikel] Arteta say he wants to be getting himself in the box on the end of things, a bit like [Granit] Xhaka did last season.
“I think Havertz can be better than that as he’s got more of an attacking instinct and he is a good finished when he gets in those positions.”
Kai Havertz could come good for Arsenal eventually
In our view, Arsenal fans should be patient with Kai Havertz and allow the forward to get used to the way that manager Mikel Arteta plays his football.
Yes, the 24-year-old has not been at his best in the opening weeks of the season, but that does not mean that he will not be a success at Arsenal.
Luka Modric did not have the best of starts at Real Madrid, but he is now one of the greatest players to have ever played for the Spanish club and is a living legend.
You never know, Havertz could end up as one of the best signings that Arsenal have ever made.
The Germany international has made 95 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career.
Havertz has scored 19 goals and given seven assists in those games.
